While, during or for, what should I use?

Es difícil encontrar la expresión adecuada para expresar el marcador de tiempo correcto en inglés. Entre While, during y for, te armas un lío. Tranquilo, ¡te damos algunas claves para orientarte en tu elección!

For / During

  1. We talked about you during the breakfast.
  2. We talked about you for 20 minutes.
  3. We talked about you for 20 minutes during the breakfast.

En inglés, se distinguirá la noción de during expresada por for (20 minutos) de la simple descripción de un acontecimiento paralelo (the breakfast). En el uso, during siempre irá seguido de un sustantivo.

Otros ejemplos:

  • I’ve been studying for 3 hours.
  • We usually wait for 15 to 25 minutes in the airport’s waiting room.

  • I will be very busy during the holidays.
  • It was boring, I fell asleep during the film.

While

Al igual que during, while se utiliza para poner dos eventos en paralelo. Sin embargo, a diferencia de during, que siempre va seguido de un sustantivo, while se utiliza con una frase completa ⇒ sujeto + verbo.

Por ejemplo :

  • We talked about work while we were having breakfast.
  • I readed the newspaper while he prepared dinner.

Aquí, while podría sustituirse por las expresiones when o as, otros marcadores temporales.

Recuerda:

for + during + nom / while + sujet + verbe
