Why is World Habitat Day? What day is World Habitat Day?

In 1985, the UN decided to proclaim the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day, with the aim of ensuring that the development of cities is sustainable and truly guarantees all citizens their right to decent housing for their families.

Why celebrate a Habitat Day?

The big trigger for the creation of this day was that, since the 1980s, more and more people living in rural areas have been leaving their homes and moving to cities in the hope of a better way of life.

It is estimated that by 2030, 60% of the world's entire population will have left the countryside and settled on the outskirts of cities and without good planning, this migration will only bring deprivation, poverty, crime, unemployment, pollution and disease.

How to celebrate World Habitat Day?

During this day many municipalities decide to present proposals on the development of the region, showcasing new real estate projects, parks, highways and even schools, to be submitted to the citizens for approval. It is advisable to attend these events and be an agent for change in our communities.

We can also present much greener ideas, such as bicycle routes, green roof developments or promoting the use of photovoltaic energy in more areas of the city, or support those who propose them by posting them on social media with the hashtag #WorldHabitatDay.
